Description
Oh, no! On the way to meet your girlfriend Haruka, our intrepid little hero has gotten ambushed by that nefarious, time-traveling villain, Professor Time. Now it’s time to join him as he crosses time and space to save her from his evil clutches.
In this run and jump action game, you’ll find yourself flung anywhere from prehistoric times to the far future and back again, defeating anything from dinosaurs to samurai to aliens just to get her back.
Your main weapon — your ever-sturdy baseball cap. Just toss it forward and let it simply boomerang back or jump as it boomerangs back to let it fly around you for a short amount of time. And if you’re lucky enough to collect enough chimes, you’ll get to witness the awesome destructive power and invincibility of the skateboard.
Combined that with a host of hazardous obstacles so prevalent in platformers and you’ve got yourself into quite a pickle trying to tackle Professor Time. Pursue and flog him with your cap so that the hero and Haruka can live happily ever after.
Time Zone
Overview & History
Released during the vibrant era of the 8-bit generation, *Time Zone* for the NES stands as a fascinating cult curio. Developed by a lesser-known studio during the height of the platformer boom, the game slipped past mainstream radar upon its initial launch, later becoming a sought-after collector's item for retro enthusiasts. The storyline casts players as Chronos, a futuristic temporal agent tasked with repairing a fractured timeline. After a rogue scientist shatters the Chrono-Core, history splinters into distinct eras—ranging from the perilous swamps of the prehistoric Jurassic epoch to the neon-lit, robotic uprisings of the 22nd century. Chronos must traverse these volatile temporal zones, recovering displaced artifacts to restore chronological order before the universe collapses into a localized paradox.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Unlike standard linear platformers of its time, *Time Zone* introduces a unique 'Temporal Shift' mechanic. Players can temporarily freeze on-screen enemies or rewind environmental hazards by collecting Chrono-Shards scattered throughout each stage. The character moves with deliberate, momentum-based physics, requiring precise platforming mastery. Chronos is equipped with the Quantum Blade for close-range melee strikes and a secondary Temporal Blaster that consumes energy to clear distant threats. Boss battles at the end of each era—such as battling a mechanized saber-toothed tiger in the Ice Age or a sentient mainframe in the cyberpunk future—test the player's reflexes and tactical use of the time-freezing ability. The pixel art is surprisingly atmospheric, featuring parallax scrolling backgrounds that vividly depict the decaying fabric of space-time.
