Top Racer is a motorcycle racing game from a behind-the-bike perspective. In both these respects, it’s a very similar game to Sega’s Hang-On series of motorcycle racers. The player can choose from two modes: Grand Prix, in which the player partakes in several consecutive races and Touring, in which the player can choose one of four courses for a single race.

The game is notable for its unusual peripheral: An inflatable motorcycle with a special handlebar controller built-in. The player can sit on the peripheral once fully inflated and use the handlebars to control the on-screen bike.

Though it lacks a traditional narrative campaign, the game captures the gritty realism of professional circuit racing, challenging players to manage their stamina and speed across grueling tracks against AI opponents.

Unlike standard top-down or rear-view racers, *Top Rider* emphasizes a pseudo-3D perspective that shifts dynamically based on your speed and turning angles. Players must master a delicate balance between high-speed acceleration and sharp cornering physics, as crashing into track boundaries results in severe time penalties and loss of momentum. The game features multiple modes, including a Grand Prix circuit and a time trial mode, each demanding strict adherence to racing lines. Stamina management is a core mechanical pillar; unlike automated throttles, sustaining top speeds requires rhythmic physical exertion (or frantic button-mashing on standard controllers), simulating the genuine exhaustion of long-distance motorcycle racing.
