Description

The player controls one of five animals (they can choose between cow, rabbit, bat, rat, and penguin) and plays games against all the other animals. In each game, the participating animals find each other on opposite sides of a square table with five balls on each side. The object of the game is to roll those balls over the table. As soon as all ten balls are on one player’s side, that player loses the game. Each game also has a time limit of 60 seconds; if that is reached, the player with the fewest balls on their side wins.

Penguin-kun Wars

Overview & History

Originally hatched in Japanese arcades by UPL in 1985 before migrating to the Famicom in 1989 courtesy of ASCII Corporation, Penguin-kun Wars (known internationally as Penguin Wars) is a delightfully quirky action-puzzle hybrid. Abandoning standard platforming tropes, the game drops players into a high-stakes, avian sporting arena. You control Pentarou, a plucky penguin tasked with competing in a chaotic, round-robin dodgeball tournament against a menagerie of eccentric animals, including a hyperactive rabbit, a brooding gorilla, and a swaggering cat. Far from a standard sports title, this charming export blends twitch reflexes with relentless tactical repositioning.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Matches take place across a top-down, single-screen arena divided right down the middle by a neutral zone. Each combatant starts behind a barricade clutching five heavy rubber balls. Upon the referee's whistle, the frantic objective is to grab the scattered spheres and violently hurl them across the dividing line straight at your opponent's face, or simply shatter their protective blocks. The mechanics run deeper than mere button-mashing: players can slide across the linoleum to snatch rolling projectiles, catch incoming balls mid-air by timing a precise grab, and strategically angle their throws to bounce off side walls. Rounds end when one participant's side is entirely depleted of balls, or when time expires. Beyond the core arcade mode, the game features a surprisingly robust tournament progression, escalating AI difficulty, and frantic two-player versus matches that have sparked fierce playground rivalries for decades.
