Description

Okay ‘toads! Let’s get EVEN!

When the evil Dark Queen kidnaps both your best buddy and the best looking girl this side of the Mazallion Star Cluster – what are you gonna do about it? Are you gonna cry? Hide? Call the Starcops? No way! Because you’re a BATTLETOAD and BATTLETOADS don’t cry, hide, or call for help. BATTLETOADS get real MAD – and then they get EVEN!

So, strap on your Blaster, power-up the Toadster, and get on down to the Dark Queen’s planet – but, watch out ‘toad – this lady’s bad, and she’s got a whole mess of really nasty surprises lined up for you – like the Psyko Pigs, the Mutant Ratpack, Robo-Manus and the Saturn Toadtrap, to name but a few. You’re gonna need all your fighting skills to defeat her – the Battletoad Butt, the Big Bad Boot and the Nuclear Knuckles. Hey, and don’t forget to take along the Jet Turbo, the Space Board, and the Speed Bike. Because you’re gonna need them all, ‘toad, if you’re gonna rescue your friends and get the frog outta there with your green skin intact!

Battletoads

Overview & History

Released by Rare in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Battletoads was initially engineered as a direct British response to the massive cultural phenomenon of Nintendo's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Developed by programmers Chris Stamper and Tim Stamper, the title gained legendary status for its punishing difficulty curve, which was intentionally designed to curb rental-store economy practices by preventing players from finishing the game over a single weekend. The narrative follows Professor T. Bird and three anthropomorphic toads—Rash, Zitz, and Pimple—as they journey across the planet Ragnarok's Volkmire to rescue Princess Angelica and their kidnapped comrade Pimple from the clutches of the evil Dark Queen and her mutated henchmen like General Slaughter and Big Bad Blag.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling beat-'em-ups, Battletoads constantly subverts genre expectations by aggressively shifting gameplay styles across its twelve stages. The core mechanics combine traditional brawler combat with high-speed vehicular racing, precision platforming, and vertical scaling. Rash and Zitz can pummel enemies using brutal context-sensitive finisher attacks, transforming their fists and feet into massive metallic sledgehammers, spiked pneumatic boots, and horned battering rams known as the "Big Bad Boot" and "Turbo Smash." Combat requires tight spatial awareness and crowd control, but the game is equally infamous for its drastic genre shifts. Players must pilot precarious speed bikes through the labyrinthine obstacles of the Turbo Tunnel, rappel down bottomless chasms while dodging descending boulders, and survive the terrifying, rhythm-memorization-dependent Wookie Hole and Rat Race levels. The two-player cooperative mode compounds the chaos, featuring permanent friendly fire where players can accidentally—or intentionally—knock their partner into bottomless pits or hazard zones.
