“Wayne’s World, Wayne’s World! Party time! Excellent! Woo, woo, woo!”

It’s Friday, it’s 10:30 and like usual, Wayne and Garth are presenting their TV show. First they start off by reading a top-10 list of the worst games they recently played at the arcade. Then Wayne accounts on how he and Garth were suddenly sucked into a video game, and Garth was kidnapped by the mysterious Zantar. “Weeuuu, weeuuu, weeuuu!” FLASHBACK, and now you’re suddenly in control of Wayne as he must embark upon a quest to save his good pal Garth.

Wayne's World

Overview & History

Released by THQ in 1993 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Wayne's World adapts the beloved *Saturday Night Live* sketch and hit film into an 8-bit side-scrolling action platformer. Players step into the flannel of Wayne Campbell, who must rescue the kidnapped rock star Cassandra and save the entire town of Aurora, Illinois from the villainous Benjamin Kane. Developed near the end of the NES's commercial lifespan, the game leans heavily into the radical, head-banging culture of the early nineties, translating iconic catchphrases and slapstick humor into a surprisingly challenging video game adventure.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game kicks off in Wayne's iconic basement, complete with the public access cable station set, before branching out into bizarre urban and suburban locations. Players must guide Wayne as he defends himself against aggressive security guards, bizarre mutant creatures, and everyday hazards using unconventional weaponry. True to his rock-and-roll ethos, Wayne's primary offensive move involves strumming his electric guitar, unleashing musical notes as projectiles to stun and defeat enemies. If foes get too close, Wayne can whip out a vacuum cleaner or hurl vinyl records. Players must carefully manage Wayne's "Schwing!" meter and health bars while platforming across precarious obstacles, navigating sewers, malls, and even cyberspace. Scattered throughout the stages are guitar picks for points and restorative snacks to keep Wayne rocking.
