Based on Troma’s cartoon series of the same name, the Toxic Crusaders protect the city of Tromaville against the plots of the alien Dr. Killemoff and his Radiation Rangers. That is, until Killemoff captures all of the Toxic Crusaders save one. As Toxie, you must “mop up” Killemoff’s forces through 6 levels and rescue his comrades before it’s too late.

The game is action-oriented. Toxie’s only abilities are to jump and to punch his way through enemies. He initially starts with a mop weapon, which can be easily lost.

Released by Bandai in 1992 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Toxic Crusaders is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up adapted from the delightfully bizarre animated series and film by Troma Entertainment. The storyline plunges players into the mutated shoes of Winston O'Flaherty—better known as Toxie, the disfigured mop-wielding hero of Tromaville. When the tyrannical Dr. Killemoff and his radioactive cronies from the planet Smogula kidnap Toxie's girlfriend Yvonne and threaten to completely liquefy the city, our reluctant green hero must clean up the streets the only way he knows how: with extreme, toxic prejudice.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game unfolds across a series of grungy urban and industrial stages populated by mutant scumbags, radioactive sludge, and hazardous environmental traps. Players initially control Toxie, though character-swapping mechanics later allow you to recruit other members of the Toxic Crusaders, each boasting distinct physical profiles and reach. The core combat relies on close-quarters brawling, where Toxie wields his trusty, glowing-green mop like a bo staff to swat away enemies. Special meter-burn attacks let players unleash devastating area-of-effect room sweeps by spinning the mop or calling in radioactive reinforcements. Navigation requires precise platforming over bottomless toxic pits, demanding careful timing on jumps while dodging relentless projectiles thrown by Killemoff’s henchmen. Between stages, vibrant comic-book-style cutscenes advance the tongue-in-cheek eco-satire plot, elevating the title above standard NES shovelware through pure, unapologetic Troma camp and surprisingly responsive beat-'em-up mechanics.
