Description

Pac-Land is a side-scrolling platformer with a cartoony feel to it. Now equipped with arms, face, and legs, Pac must guide a fairy back to her home in Fairy Land, but this task will not be easy because Inky, Blinky, Pinky, Clyde, and Sue will pursue Pac-Man as he travels through Pac-Land. When he finally transports the fairy back to her home, Pac is given some magic shoes, which will help him get to his own home, where he will be greeted by his family: Ms. Pac-Man, Baby Pac-Man, Chomp Chomp, and Sourpuss.

There are sixteen rounds to complete, with four trips each. During each round, he can grab a power pellet, which cause ghosts to turn blue, allowing Pac-Man to eat them for points. Points are also awarded by collecting fruit that appear, like cherries and strawberries. In some rounds, Pac must use a springboard to jump over a lake. He must also make it to the end of each round before time runs out, otherwise a ghost will chase him.

Pac-Land

Overview & History

Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989 by Namco (and ported by Tengen in North America), Pac-Land radically transformed the iconic dot-muncher's puzzle legacy into a side-scrolling platformer. Loosely based on the Hanna-Barbera animated series, the storyline kicks off when Pac-Man encounters a lost fairy who needs a safe escort back to Fairyland. Unfortunately, ghosts Sue, Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde are hot on his trail to thwart the rescue mission. Although arcade versions debuted in 1984 as a pioneering running game ahead of Super Mario Bros., the NES iteration brought the whimsical, horizontally scrolling adventure into living rooms with colorful sprites and a catchy, looping chiptune soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike maze-based predecessors, Pac-Land unfolds across multiple scrolling "Trips" divided into thematic stages. Pac-Man runs constantly from left to right, navigating urban streets, dense forests, deep oceans, and treacherous mountains. Because traditional jumping was novel for Pac-Man at the time, players must master dual buttons for directional movement rather than a single jump command—tapping left or right repeatedly makes him run. Power Pellets still exist, temporarily reversing the roles and allowing Pac-Man to gobble up the chasing ghosts for bonus points. Along the way, players collect hidden fruits, ride pogo sticks for massive leaps, board airplanes, and dodge fireballs. The ultimate goal of each Trip is to safely deliver the fairy to Fairyland, where she rewards Pac-Man with magical boots that enable super-high floating jumps for the return journey.
