Description

The Immortal is an isometric game with puzzle-solving and action combat. Progress is made by encountering a hazard, dying, solving the problem, encountering the next hazard. To solve a level, you have to know its traps and their patterns by heart. The puzzles range from simple avoidance of traps to the correct use of items; you collect objects in an inventory. Every now and then, the game offers a special challenge. For example, you’ve got to ride a magic carpet through a hallway full of fire traps, or ride a barrel on an underground river.

The Immortal

Overview & History: Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 by Electronic Arts, The Immortal is a dark fantasy isometric action-adventure port of Will Harvey's Apple IIGS classic. Developed by Sandcastle, this unforgiving quest puts players in the shoes of an unnamed wizard apprentice descending into a harrowing, eight-level dungeon. The narrative unfolds through cryptic scrolls as you search for your missing mentor, Mordamir, only to uncover a deep conspiracy involving warring fantasy races. The NES version is legendary for its bleak atmosphere, eerie musical score, and surprisingly violent, detailed death animations that pushed the boundaries of Nintendo's strict censorship policies.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay of The Immortal splits between isometric exploration and a dedicated, real-time combat screen. While navigating the dungeon's rooms, players must walk along precise diagonal axes to dodge lethal pitfalls, such as invisible traps, hidden pit harpoons, and ravenous slimes. Exploration is heavily puzzle-oriented, requiring you to carefully utilize found inventory items like water bowls, giant eggs, and protective amulets. When confronting hostile Goblins or Trolls, the camera zooms in for a dual-perspective sword fight. Here, players must read the opponent's body language to dodge left or right, building up stamina to unleash counter-attacks. Failure to time these dodges results in instant decapitation or incineration, while success rewards you with cinematic, brutal finishing blows.
