Multidude

Overview & History

Released during the twilight era of the Nintendo Entertainment System, Multidude is a fascinatingly obscure puzzle-platformer developed by Laxity and published by Mega Soft in 1993 exclusively for the Taiwanese market. Due to its extremely limited production run and regional distribution, original cartridges have become elusive holy grails for retro collectors. The storyline follows a sentient digital entity named Multidude, who must traverse a corrupted cyberspace grid known as the "Neon Core." The core has been infected by a rogue virus that threatens to delete the mainframe. Unlike traditional NES titles of the era that focused purely on combat, this game blends logical spatial reasoning with frantic platforming precision across eight abstract, geometric sectors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay mechanic revolves around biological and digital replication. Multidude does not venture alone; players must manage a trail of clone avatars that mimic the protagonist's movements with a slight delayed echo. Character moves include standard running and jumping, but the defining mechanic is the "Multi-Shift," which allows players to cycle the active control state between the original character and trailing duplicates to solve multi-switch puzzles simultaneously. Enemies act as firewall sentinels that patrol specific digital circuits; touching them instantly corrupts the active avatar. To defend himself, Multidude can unleash a "Data Pulse" shockwave that clears adjacent digital blocks and temporarily freezes approaching malware, though this ability has a strict cooldown meter. Navigation requires careful synchronization of momentum, as your clones will blindly replicate leaps into hazardous glitches if you miscalculate your trajectory.
