Description

Based on the film of the same name, Kevin McAllister has been left home alone for Christmas while his family is on vacation. This would not be so bad except for two burglars, Harry and Marv, aka the Wet Bandits, have decided to burglarize his house. However, Kevin is too smart to play victim and will use the items he has available to make traps for the burglars.

Home Alone is a side scroller. Controlling Kevin, the player must wander around Kevin’s house picking up icons representing different kinds of traps. He then drops these icons onto the ground, in the path of one of the burglars, stunning them and earning a score. Once stunned, Kevin can walk past them and continue collecting trap icons.

Developed by Imagineering and published by LJN in 1991, Home Alone for the Nintendo Entertainment System translates John Hughes’ classic holiday film into an arcade-style survival game. Players step into the sneakers of eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, who must defend his suburban Chicago home from the notorious "Wet Bandits," Harry and Marv, for twenty frantic real-time minutes until the police arrive. The game captures the movie's chaotic essence, blending frantic item-collection mechanics with frantic cat-and-mouse evasion across the sprawling, snow-dusted house.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around resource management and house fortification. Kevin starts in the attic and must explore various rooms, rummaging through closets, drawers, and toy chests to collect household items like marbles, super-glue, toy cars, and paint cans. These objects are then strategically placed at specific hotspots near doors and windows to create traps that stun or slow down Harry and Marv. Kevin's main offensive weapon is a trusty BB gun, which can shoot burglars if timed correctly. If Kevin gets caught, he loses precious seconds while enduring classic cartoon-style punishment, shrinking his remaining time. The ultimate goal is to survive the twenty-minute countdown, after which Kevin leads the bandits down to the basement for the final trap sequence, securing his victory and saving the house.
