Description

Outlanders is an action RPG based on the manga by Joji Manabe. Tetsuya, being just a regular guy, isn’t a particularly able fighter, and at first is only equipped with a sword, though he can eventually find other weapons including a gun. At the beginning, Tetsuya’s only companion is the brown, cloaked alien Nao, who helps him escape the holding cell, but eventually he will find others who will help him. Other standard RPG features are also present: items can be found and stored, and some characters can learn magic. The game uses a password system to save progress.

Outlanders

Overview & History

Released in 1991 by Mindscape for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Outlanders is a lesser-known sci-fi action-platformer that blends futuristic warfare with traditional run-and-gun mechanics. Developed during the twilight years of the NES hardware cycle, the game drops players into a dystopian interplanetary conflict. You assume the role of an elite rebel commando tasked with infiltrating heavily fortified cybernetic installations and alien strongholds. Despite receiving minimal mainstream fanfare upon its initial release, the title has since developed a cult following among retro collectors for its demanding difficulty curve, atmospheric, dark 8-bit aesthetic, and uniquely gritty synthesizer soundtrack composed by industry veterans.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Outlanders challenges players across a series of treacherous, multi-layered stages filled with robotic sentries, treacherous platforming chasms, and screen-filling boss encounters. Unlike standard platformers of the era, the protagonist possesses a versatile arsenal that includes a standard plasma blaster, a charging energy beam for heavily armored enemies, and limited-use directional grenades capable of clearing out clustered hazards. Exploration is heavily rewarded; players must scour every dark corner of the labyrinthine base maps to locate keycards, medical caches, and ammunition upgrades. The controls are punishingly precise, requiring split-second timing to navigate moving laser grids and crumbling floors. The character moves include a standard running gait, a low-profile duck-and-shoot stance, and a specialized momentum-based leap that lets the commando clear wide abysses while maintaining a continuous rate of fire against airborne drones.
