Description

Eight years after a great war was waged between colonies in outer space, peace has finally settled back onto the Earth. Tadashi Himukai, a 17-year-old war orphan, purchases a used worker-mech in order to start a construction business with his girlfriend, Elina Furfa. However, when he first activates it, the worker-mech disguise falls away, revealing a combat model Metal Slader, which were all supposedly dismantled after the war, and an enigmatic message is displayed in the cockpit: “EARTH IN PERIL… SEEK THE CREATOR”. Prompted by this warning, Tadashi, his sister Azusa, and Elina head out into space to find the answers behind it.

Metal Slader Glory

Overview & History

Released in 1991 by HAL Laboratory exclusively for the Japanese Famicom, Metal Slader Glory is a legendary, late-era 8-bit masterpiece that pushed the NES hardware to its absolute visual and technical limits. Directed by Yoshiki Okamoto, the game languished in obscurity in the West for decades due to its massive data size (requiring a custom memory mapper chip) and late-cycle release, ultimately arriving on the Wii Virtual Console long after its debut. The storyline follows young mechanic Tadashi and his robotic companion Yayoi as they uncover a military conspiracy involving the titular high-powered armor mechs known as Metal Sladers. Falsely accused of crimes and pursued by hostile forces, Tadashi must pilot the prototype Glory across various sci-fi colonies to prevent planetary annihilation, all told through breathtaking, anime-style cinematic cutscenes that rival early 16-bit visual novels.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling run-and-guns, Metal Slader Glory is divided into two distinct gameplay pillars: point-and-click visual novel investigation and strategic, menu-driven command battles. Exploration requires players to interact with environments, gather clues, and converse with a colorful cast of characters. When combat initiates, players pilot the Metal Slader using a tactical command window. Battles require precise timing and strategic resource management; you must monitor your mecha’s energy reserves, structural integrity, and heat levels while selecting offensive maneuvers like plasma swords, missile barrages, and vulcan cannons. Defending and counter-attacking at the exact frame of enemy strikes reduces incoming damage, transforming the turn-based interface into a reactive, high-stakes duel. Customization is also key, as players must periodically upgrade the Glory’s armor plating, boosters, and weaponry using credits earned throughout the campaign.
