Description

Perman Part 2 is the sequel to Irem’s 1990 platformer “Perman: Enban o Torikaese”

Perman Part 2: Himitsu Kessha Madoodan o Taose!

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1991 by Epoch for the Family Computer (Famicom), Perman Part 2: Himitsu Kessha Madoodan o Taose! (Defeat the Secret Society Madoodan!) serves as the sequel to the earlier 1990 NES platformer based on Fujiko F. Fujio’s beloved manga and anime franchise. The storyline plunges Mitsuo Suwa (Perman No. 1) and his superhero comrades into a high-stakes rescue mission after the villainous Madoodan syndicate kidnaps their mentor, Birdman. Departing from the standard linear stage progression of its predecessor, this installment incorporates distinct overhead world map navigation, allowing players to choose between various action stages and hidden bonus areas as they track down the nefarious syndicate's subterranean headquarters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike many standard licensed platformers of the era, Perman Part 2 places a heavy emphasis on character-switching mechanics. Players can select from multiple members of the Perman crew—including Perman No. 1, Bo-chan (Perman No. 2), P-ko, and Sumire (Perman No. 3)—each possessing distinct physical attributes and signature attacks. Navigating the colorful, vertically and horizontally scrolling levels requires precise platforming and utilization of unique movement traits, such as Perman No. 1's iconic flight cape which allows for temporary hovering over treacherous bottomless pits and spiked hazards. Combat involves tossing customized projectiles unique to each hero, collecting hidden power-up badges to upgrade attack strength, and managing health meters against erratic enemy types ranging from mechanical drones to eccentric Madoodan grunts. Boss encounters at the end of regional zones demand pattern recognition and the strategic deployment of specific characters whose offensive capabilities best counter the boss's weaknesses.
