They tumbled down into the darkness below, but to their surprise they fell slowly and all sorts of objects fell around.

Previously never released from 1993, the game source code was discovered by The Oliver Twins and later released online in 2015.

Wonderland Dizzy

Overview & History

Developed by the legendary Oliver Twins, Wonderland Dizzy is a fascinating relic of NES history. Originally programmed in 1993 for Codemasters, the game was mysteriously shelved and left unreleased for over two decades until the source code was discovered and officially released as a free NES ROM in 2015. Fusing Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland lore with the signature British platform-adventure style of the Yolkfolk, this title tasks the intrepid egg-shaped hero, Dizzy, with navigating a bizarre, whimsical dreamscape. Dizzy must explore the surreal environments of Wonderland to defeat the Queen of Hearts, rescue his imprisoned friends, and find a way back home, all while managing a notoriously restrictive single-item inventory system that defines the puzzle-solving progression.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear platformers, Wonderland Dizzy relies heavily on environmental puzzle-solving, item trading, and non-linear exploration. Players guide Dizzy across floating platforms, treacherous terrain, and surreal mazes filled with eccentric denizens like the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat. Dizzy retains his classic physics, meaning movement has a slight momentum that requires precise platforming. Survival is governed by a star-based health meter; collecting sparkling stars scattered throughout the kingdom increases Dizzy's maximum vitality. The core gameplay loop revolves around finding specific items—such as keys, potions, and riddles—and using them on interactable hotspots in the game world. Because Dizzy can only carry one item at a time, players must carefully plan their routes, backtracking extensively to swap out inventory items and uncover hidden secrets, warp zones, and mini-games that unlock the true ending.
