Description

Deep within enemy territory, your fellow countrymen are imprisoned. Only one man in the free world would dare attempt to save them. You, Stringfellow Hawke, commander of Airwolf. And yet, as you strap yourself into the cockpit of your supersonic jet copter, you know this is the most dangerous assignment you have ever flown.

Your mission is mapped out. Airwolf’s heat-seeking missiles and superpowered machine guns are fired up, ready to blow the terrorists away. But can you evade enemy radar time after time? Can you sneak behind the enemy lines, find the captives and bring them to safety before you crash land or worse?

Headquarters knows that you have the skill and firepower it takes. You say you’ve got the guts… now prove it!

Airwolf (Acclaim)

Overview & History

Released by Acclaim Entertainment in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, *Airwolf* adapts the beloved 1980s television espionage series into a vertically and horizontally scrolling shoot-'em-up. Unlike Acclaim's other NES releases, this game tasks players with piloting the legendary supersonic helicopter on a perilous Cold War rescue mission. The storyline places you inside the cockpit of the ultimate high-tech rotary-wing aircraft, commissioned by the mysterious "The Firm" to infiltrate heavily fortified enemy territories behind the Iron Curtain. Your primary objective is to navigate hostile airspace, neutralize armored battalions, and ultimately rescue captured American spies scattered across hostile military zones.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game splits its action into two distinct phases: navigating an overhead-scrolling map to locate restricted underground bases, and descending into claustrophobic, side-scrolling underground cave networks. Players must carefully manage a finite fuel supply and limited ammunition, forcing strategic engagement with heavily armed anti-aircraft turrets, rival fighter jets, and entrenched tanks. As you pilot the iconic supersonic helicopter, you can toggle between forward-firing machine guns and devastating air-to-ground missiles. Rescuing captives requires precision hovering and extraction maneuvers, while boss encounters at the end of each sector demand mastery of Airwolf's elusive loop-the-loop evasive maneuver to dodge incoming surface-to-air retaliations.
