OBELIX has disappeared…

The peace and quiet of the small village of indomitable Gauls is broken by a disturbing piece of news: Obelix has failed to return from his wild boar hunt. The village council convenes and Asterix decides to set off to find his friend.

Leave with him and travel throughout Gaul, across the Roman Empire, taking your search as far afield as the Egyptian Pyramids…

And as you battle with the Roman armies and avoid the traps set by Caesar’s spies, perhaps you will find Obelix.

Magic potion, Romans, fights, punches, catapults, wild boar, not forgetting that fish that’s not quite “fresh”…

RELIVE THE ADVENTURES OF ASTERIX THE GAUL!

Astérix

Overview & History

Developed by Bit Managers and published by Infogrames in 1993, Astérix for the Nintendo Entertainment System represents one of the final European-exclusive releases for Nintendo's 8-bit console. Based on the iconic French comic book series by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, the game drops players into 50 BC Gaul, where the relentless Roman legions under Julius Caesar have captured the village druid, Getafix. To rescue him, Astérix and his towering, delivery-obsessed companion Obelix embark on a continent-spanning rescue mission that takes them from the forests of Gaul to the arenas of Rome and the sands of Egypt.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear side-scrollers, Astérix introduces a cooperative dynamic (or single-player character-swapping mechanic) where players can alternate control between the titular hero and Obelix on the fly. Astérix is fast and agile, capable of double-jumping and squeezing into tight spaces, whereas Obelix is heavy, can break through cracked stone flooring with his sheer mass, and delivers devastatingly wide melee swings. The core gameplay loop blends platforming traversal with frantic beat-'em-up combat against legionnaires, gladiators, and wildlife. Collecting scattered magic helmets acts as currency, while consuming magic potion grants temporary invincibility and enhanced strength, sending Roman soldiers flying off-screen with classic comic-book sound effect visualizers. The level design cleverly incorporates vertical exploration, hidden caves, and environmental hazards across diverse regional backdrops faithfully translated into 8-bit pixel art.
