Sir Ababol

Overview & History

Developed originally by Locomalito and Gryzor87 for MSX computers in 2010 as a love letter to classic Spanish golden-age platformers, Sir Ababol eventually received a remarkable and highly faithful homebrew demake for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The storyline follows the reluctant, garlic-loving knight Sir Ababol as he embarks on a whimsical quest across perilous medieval terrain to gather ingredients for a magical stew. Far from a simple reskin, the NES version captures the challenging, single-screen platforming ethos of 8-bit European microcomputer games, complete with vibrant color palettes, charmingly chunky pixel art, and an infectious chiptune soundtrack that plays on loop as you conquer screens filled with carnivorous plants, spiky obstacles, and hopping woodland creatures.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay relies on strict, puzzle-like platforming where Sir Ababol navigates labyrinthine, flip-screen stages divided horizontally and vertically. Unlike high-flying action heroes, Ababol's movement has a distinct, deliberate momentum, requiring precise timing to clear hazardous gaps. Scattered across the levels are collectible ababol flowers, keys to unlock progress-blocking gates, and various treasures that boost your score. The world is non-linear, forcing players to mentally map out interconnected rooms, discover hidden paths, and manage a limited number of lives against unforgiving enemy placement and instant-death traps.
