Description

The player assumes the role of a spy who infiltrates a building filled with elevators. He must collect secret documents from the building and traverse the 30 levels of the building using an increasingly complex series of elevators. The player is pursued by enemy agents who appear from behind closed doors. The player must outwit them via force or evasion. Successful completion of a level involves collecting all the secret documents and traversing the building from top to bottom. In the lower floors of the building, the elevator systems are so complex that some puzzle-solving skills are needed.

Elevator Action

Overview & History

Originally developed by Taito as an arcade sensation in 1983, Elevator Action made its iconic leap to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985 (Japan) and 1987 (North America). Players step into the trench coat of Agent Otto, a dedicated secret spy infiltrating a massive, highly secure 30-story skyscraper. The mission is as perilous as it is urgent: covertly navigate the vertical maze of the building, infiltrate designated red doors to collect top-secret documents, and successfully escape to the basement getaway car. Unlike standard side-scrollers of the era, the game turns architectural layout into a tactical puzzle. You aren't just moving left and right; you are constantly calculating vertical drops, manipulating building mechanics, and outsmarting relentless counter-espionage agents.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around vertical traversal using a dizzying network of elevators and escalators across 4 distinct, looping floors. Agent Otto is armed with a standard-issue pistol, but survival requires more than just shooting. You can leap over gaps, duck beneath incoming enemy fire, and crush pursuers by riding elevators on top of them or dropping heavy overhead light fixtures onto their heads. The skyscraper's infrastructure is your greatest weapon and your deadliest hazard; riding an elevator to the bottom of its shaft without paying attention will cause a fatal crash. Enemies spawn continuously from doors, shooting blindly or chasing you relentlessly. Timing is everything—miscalculate an elevator's arrival, and you will find yourself cornered by armed guards with no escape route.
