Nintendo GOLF lets you choose your clubs, change your stance, control your swings – even select the angle of impact! With Nintendo’s state-of-the-art graphics and realistic game play, you’ll really believe you’re on the fairways. So play Nintendo GOLF, because there’s not a video golf game on par with it anywhere!

Golf

Overview & History

Developed by Nintendo Research & Development 1 and released in Japan in 1984 before hitting North America alongside the NES launch in 1985, Golf stands as a foundational milestone for digital sports games. Helmed by legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto, this pixelated precursor to the powerhouse Mario Golf series stripped the sport down to its pure, mathematical essence. There is no narrative storyline or cinematic preamble; instead, players are immediately dropped onto a minimalist, bird's-eye-view green with only the wind and their wits to guide them through 18 distinct, increasingly treacherous holes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike modern arcade-style sports titles, Golf demands precision, patience, and an understanding of physics. The game presents a dual-plane interface: a top-down tactical map for plotting your trajectory, and a side-profile view of the golfer executing the swing. Players choose from a modest bag of clubs—including woods, irons, a wedge, and a putter—each scaled for specific distance arcs and roll behaviors. The core mechanic revolves around the legendary three-click power meter: click once to start the swing backswing, click a second time to determine shot power at the top of the arc, and click a third time on the return to establish accuracy. Hit the sweet spot, and your ball sails down the fairway; miss your mark, and you risk a brutal slice into the deep rough, towering trees, or frustrating water hazards that punish even minor miscalculations. A subtle wind meter constantly alters ball drift, adding an essential layer of tactical calculation to every single stroke.
