Description

Jennifer’s been kidnapped! Now’s your chance to prove you’re a sharp-shooting detective by helping Jennifer’s father find the five diamonds that will pay her ransom. You’ll use your Zapper light gun to blow away anything that gets in your way. But even with the Zapper, this case will be hard to crack. Because not only are the diamonds hard to find, but you only have 24 hours to find them! What’s more, you’ll have to think fast and shoot even faster, because ferocious monsters, diving airplanes and hungry man-eating sharks will stop at nothing to prevent you from getting to the diamonds. Think you’re a sharp-shooting detective? Well, you better be. Because if you’re not, it’s curtains for you in this quick-on-the-trigger Nintendo Light Gun game!

Gumshoe

Overview & History

Released by Nintendo in 1986 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Gumshoe stands out as one of the few early titles designed specifically to utilize the NES Zapper light gun. Developed by Nintendo Research & Development 1 under the direction of Gunpei Yokoi, the game introduces a quirky kidnapping plot where Mr. Stevenson, a retired secret agent, must rescue his daughter Benni from the ruthless King Kong Koopa (later renamed King Dom). Stevenson is pursued by his old enemies, the Slime gang, and has a limited 24-hour window to save her. Because Stevenson is constantly walking forward automatically, the core challenge relies heavily on the player shooting objects in the environment to manipulate his movement and survival.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard light gun shooters where players merely fire at enemies, Gumshoe requires players to shoot the protagonist himself to make him jump over obstacles, leap across chasms, and avoid hazards. Shooting enemies, balloons, and floating red enemy drones awards points and prevents damage, while collecting white balloons grants extra lives. The game spans four distinct stages, featuring multi-tiered vertical scrolling environments infested with bats, piranhas, and floating platforms. Each stage culminates in a boss encounter requiring precise Zapper accuracy. Because the standard NES controller must be held by player one to walk and jump while player two holds the Zapper, or played simultaneously via a dual-input setup, mastering the timing between the D-pad and the light gun is uniquely demanding.
