Description

The impossible, and unthinkable has happened. Terrorists have seized the underground control complex of a nuclear missile site. It’s up to you to infiltrate the installation and eliminate the leader of the terrorists army.

It won’t be easy. Powerful tanks, treacherous waterways and the bridges all part of enemy territory now. The only weapon you’ll be able to defeat the terrorists with is HEAVY BARREL – but it’s been dismantled and is in pieces inside the installation itself. Once you’ve battled your way inside, you must find the keys and reassemble the weapon. Brute force alone won’t defeat the terrorists. This isn’t a job for just anyone. That’s why you’re here.

Heavy Barrel

Overview & History

Released by Data East for the NES in 1990—following their 1987 arcade cabinet—*Heavy Barrel* is an aggressive, top-down military run-and-gun shooter. Set in a dystopian future, the storyline tasks a lone, elite commando with infiltrating a heavily fortified underground terrorist stronghold. Your mission is to recover the ultimate secret weapon, the eponymous "Heavy Barrel," which has been dismantled and scattered across six treacherous zones. Unlike many arcade ports of its era that suffered from severe downgrades, the NES version retains the frantic pace and intense difficulty of the coin-op original, challenging players through hostile jungles, heavily guarded compounds, and subterranean lairs filled with mechanized bosses.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, *Heavy Barrel* is celebrated for its unique weapon-assembly system and multi-directional movement. As you blast through waves of enemy infantry, tanks, and stationary turrets, downed foes occasionally drop keys. Collecting three keys unlocks locked crates containing scattered components of the Heavy Barrel super-weapon. Once fully assembled, this devastating weapon temporarily grants your commando screen-clearing firepower, transforming the difficulty of later stages. Players can rotate their firing direction independently of movement using shoulder buttons on arcade layouts, though the NES adaptation cleverly maps this to allow strategic diagonal and rotational shooting. You also collect grenades to toss over obstacles, power-up icons that upgrade your standard rifle into flamethrowers or spread shots, and rescue captive hostages for bonus points.
