Description

It drove you bonkers in the arcades. Now this mixed up marble marathon is ready for your Nintendo! The challenge is to roll your marble into the hidden Goal Line on 6 treacherous 3-D raceways. Every corner is a cliffhanger. And every second counts!

Each raceway is a unique maze of tricky terrain and marble menaces. Can you stay in control as you hunt for the goal? You teeter up, down and around narrow ramps and ridges. Sneak past hungry Marble Munchers. Battle nasty steelies for the right of way. Its enough to make you lose your marbles!

Beat the clock in the battle against time. Or fight a friend’s marble to the finish! Either way you play, you’ll be on the edge to the very last ledge!

Marble Madness

Overview & History

Originally engineered by Mark Cerny as a revolutionary arcade title in 1984 utilizing an analog trackball, Marble Madness made its tricky transition to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, courtesy of Rare and published by Milton Bradley. Unlike typical platformers with explicit narratives, the game drops your glass sphere into an abstract, isometric world governed by harsh gravity. You must race against a relentless countdown timer across six increasingly hostile stages—from the undulating beginner grid of Practice to the dizzying, mechanical abyss of Silly Wave—while avoiding relentless obstacles like black marble rivals, vacuum cleaners, and melting acid pools.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Movement is dictated by the isometric perspective, meaning traditional directional mapping feels slightly skewed, requiring players to master momentum and diagonal navigation. Your sphere possesses no traditional attack or jump abilities; survival relies entirely on pure physics, precise acceleration, and gravity management. You must navigate narrow ramps, avoid rolling enemies, and survive dizzying drops without shattering. Collecting optional items provides minor time bonuses, but the true challenge lies in conquering the hostile terrain before the clock hits zero.
