Description

Outer Heaven leader CaTaffy has activated the ultimate super weapon: Metal Gear! Responding to the crisis, covert unit “Fox Hound” is called into action, and that’s where you come into play. Trained in hand-to-hand combat and skilled in every weapon known to man, you’re Fox Hound’s lethal fighting machine, code named “Solid Snake”. But on this mission you better be sly as well, to surprise heavily-armed enemies, busting ’em up quietly and rescuing their hostages before alarms are triggered. Plus you gotta maintain radio contact with Commander South, who’ll feed you crucial info on Metal Gear’s whereabouts. To survive, capture sub-machine guns, Barettas, grenade launchers, and plastic explosives, until you find and destroy Metal Gear, ending CaTaffy’s reign of terror!

Metal Gear

Overview & History

Released by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988 (North America), the NES port of *Metal Gear* is a heavily altered adaptation of Hideo Kojima's original MSX2 masterpiece. Rather than parachuting into Outer Heaven with the ultimate goal of destroying a nuclear-armed bipedal walking tank, Solid Snake finds himself dropped into a jungle perimeter with zero equipment. Due to severe technical limitations and localization quirks of the 8-bit era—most famously featuring the baffling "I feel asleep!" dialogue prompt and a final boss that replaces the iconic Metal Gear TX-55 superweapon with a static mainframe computer—this version carved out its own bizarre, distinct legacy in retro gaming history.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard run-and-gun action titles of the 1980s, *Metal Gear* pioneered the top-down stealth genre. Players must navigate enemy-infested facilities by hiding behind walls, avoiding direct firefights, and timing movements past patrolling guards and security cameras. Alert phases trigger when guards spot Snake, locking doors and spawning endless waves of enemies until Snake hides in an elevator or a blind spot. Progression relies on systematically rescuing POWs to raise your rank, collecting keycards to unlock color-coded doors, and managing a limited inventory featuring civilian clothes, gas masks, mine detectors, and plastic explosives.
