Description

After his ironclad plan to rule the world rusted away, crazed Colonel Vermon CaTaffy went psycho. Unfortunately, your two best friends took the brunt of his frenzy and lost their fight to live. As nutty as ever, CaTaffy has sought asylum from the world’s premiere bad guy – Higharolla Kockamamie. Grateful to this ‘Rolla Radical, the Colonel has donated the biggest, baddest Ultra-Sheik Nuclear Attack Tank to his fellow madman’s world dominating cause.

Now your mission is to not only save Earth, but to inflict revenge. It’s a job you’ll definitely take personally as you infiltrate a nation of armed lunatics. Blow up a battleship. Hijack a train. Locate dozens of weapons and a truth serum that’ll force enemy commanders to spill their guts. Then, destroy Vermon, Higharolla and the Earth Threatening Device with one lethal blow. All this, while staying in radio contact with a foxy spy named Jennifer and a Stealth copter pilot who’ll be hovering nearby. So whaddaya think, Snake – are you commando enough to handle this Kockamamie scheme?

Snake's Revenge

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Snake's Revenge is a fascinating anomaly in gaming history. Conceived as a direct sequel to the original MSX Metal Gear specifically for Western markets, it bypassed Hideo Kojima during early development. Konami created this title independently alongside the official Japanese MSX sequel, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. The storyline thrusts a battle-hardened Solid Snake back into action after intelligence reveals a rogue terrorist organization is mass-producing a new, vastly superior model of the nuclear-armed bipedal tank, Metal Gear. Aided by CIA operatives John Turner and Nick Myrdoch, Snake must infiltrate a heavily fortified enemy stronghold to dismantle the weapon before launch. Despite not being part of Kojima's official canon, the game successfully introduced several recurring tropes to the franchise, including the iconic exclamation mark alert sound, crawl spaces, and night-vision goggles, cementing its unique legacy in stealth-action history.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its pure top-down predecessor, Snake's Revenge splits its gameplay into two distinct perspectives. The majority of the game utilizes a top-down view where Snake navigates labyrinthine compounds, disarms security lasers, uses cardboard boxes to fool guards, and rescues hostages. However, specific transition points shift the camera into a fast-paced, side-scrolling action format reminiscent of standard 1990s run-and-gun platformers. Snake’s move set is notably expanded from the original game; he can punch enemies in close quarters, fire silenced pistols, deploy remote-controlled missiles, and crawl horizontally through low ventilation shafts. Boss encounters test the player's resource management and reflexes, requiring specific weapon countermeasures like the grenade launcher or mines. Players must constantly monitor their alert level and ration scarce medical supplies to survive the grueling infiltration.
