Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 by Mindscape, *M.U.L.E.* is a visionary port of the legendary 1983 Atari 8-bit classic designed by Danielle Bunten Berry. Set on the harsh, newly colonized frontier planet of Irata (Atari spelled backward), the storyline tasks a rotating crew of four eccentric alien colonists with subduing a volatile world over a rigorous five-to-twelve-year term. Blending turn-based economic management with frantic real-time resource gathering, this masterwork pioneered the multiplayer board-game-video-game hybrid, supporting up to four human players through the NES Four Score adapter. Though commercially overlooked during the NES’s action-heavy heyday, its profound influence echoes through modern strategy and simulation genres.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players begin by selecting one of several distinct alien species—such as the industrious Wampuses or the greedy Gollux—each possessing unique economic advantages, movement speeds, and starting capital. The core loop revolves around claiming hexagonal plots of land on the planetary grid and acquiring M.U.L.E.s (Multiple Use Labor Elements), the bipedal robotic workhorses of the colony. You must outfit these mules at the town store to harvest specific planetary resources: Food to sustain your colonists, Energy to power your operations, Smithore to build more equipment, and the ultra-valuable Crystite. Every turn features a timed development phase where players scramble to place their mules on plots, followed by a cutthroat Town Auction where supply and demand dictate market prices. Beware of random planetary hazards like acid rain, pirate attacks, and the notoriously elusive Wumpus roaming the wilderness, all of which keep the chaotic extraterrestrial economy teetering on the brink of collapse.
