It also takes the skills of a true pinball wizard… which you can hone on the three other video pinball games included on this cartridge! Pinball Quest

Overview & History

Developed by Tose and published by Jaleco in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, *Pinball Quest* boldly fused traditional arcade pinball mechanics with top-down Japanese role-playing elements. Rather than merely chasing high scores, players navigate a fantasy-themed kingdom where a wicked goblin has kidnapped the princess. As a silver-ball hero, you traverse four distinct themed tables—Fantasy, Circus, Haunted, and the ultimate RPG adventure mode known as The Black Table—battling monsters, buying gear, and exploring dungeons using only your flippers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard pinball sims, *Pinball Quest* introduces persistence, hit points, and inventory management. In the RPG mode, hitting specific targets triggers lane events, opens hidden trapdoors, and launches your ball into overhead dungeon screens where you bump into enemies to deal damage while dodging counter-attacks. Along the way, you collect gold to purchase table upgrades from shops—such as magnetic shields to prevent drains, spiked bumpers, heavier balls for higher momentum, and specialized flipper powers. Success demands precise timing, careful ricochet calculations, and tactical mastery of multi-level boards to defeat stage bosses and ultimately rescue the captured royalty.
