Description

A sadistic crime wave is sweeping through old Detroit. The situation is explosive – in fact, it is so bad, a private corporation, O.C.P., has assumed control of the police force. Then, a research team creates an unstoppable, indestructible law enforcement cyborg – named RoboCop. Using a wild assortment of weapons, including RoboCop’s Special Issue Auto-9, you must stop every sleazeball criminal you encounter with deadly, piercing accuracy. But beware, there are forces on the street – and within O.C.P. – that will stop at nothing to see RoboCop eliminated. Make your way past 6 levels of street thugs, Boddicker and the powerful ED-209 to your final battle with Dick Jones. Prepare yourself for non-stop action in one of the most explosive games you will ever play. It’s going to take more than a cop to clean up the scum of old Detroit – it’s going to take RoboCop. “Your move, creep.”

RoboCop

Overview & History

Developed by Data East and published by Ocean Software, the NES port of RoboCop hit North America in December 1989. Based on Paul Verhoeven's iconic 1987 sci-fi satire, the game places players behind the titanium visor of Officer Alex Murphy, resurrected as the ultimate cyborg law enforcer to clean up the crime-infested, dystopian ruins of Old Detroit. Unlike typical fast-paced arcade shooters, this 8-bit adaptation leans into a deliberate, methodical pace that mirrors the cinematic heavy-footed gait of its protagonist, pitting you against street punks, ED-209, and the corrupt executives of Omni Consumer Products (OCP).

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game is structured across alternating stages that capture different aspects of Murphy's crusade. Standard side-scrolling platforming levels require you to traverse ruined streets and industrial warehouses, utilizing your Auto-9 pistol to blast armed thugs while rescuing hostages and managing a strictly timed energy bar. Between action stages, the game shifts perspective: first-person shooting galleries test your reflexes as you blast muggers holding innocent citizens hostage, and static puzzle mini-games task you with reconstructing criminal mugshots from memory. Combat mechanics are heavily defined by RoboCop’s lack of agility—he cannot duck or jump, forcing the player to master timing, precise crosshair positioning, and weapon upgrades like the Cobra Assault Cannon to absorb incoming damage from rival syndicate enforcers.
