Description

The Super Spy Hunter has a super spy car. It’s actually a well-armed car that can turn into a boat or a plane at opportune times. The action is fast vertical scrolling as the vehicle faces all manner of powerful vehicle threats from a well-funded terrorist enemy — cars, trucks, helicopters, etc. Luckily, there are many powerups to collect along the way, both defensive and offensive.

Super Spy Hunter

Overview & History

Released by Sunsoft for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, *Super Spy Hunter* (known in Japan as *Battle Formula*) is a fast-paced, vertically scrolling vehicular combat game. Serving as a spiritual sequel/remix of the arcade classic *Spy Hunter*, this title thrusts players into the boots of Lieutenant Cole, a top-tier secret agent tasked with dismantling the terrorist syndicate known as "V.8." Unlike its predecessor, Sunsoft infused the NES iteration with explosive, near-constant action, blending high-speed highway racing with frantic on-foot infiltration sequences and colossal boss encounters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay shifts dynamically between two distinct perspectives. Players primarily control Cole’s heavily armed interceptor car, navigating a crowded, hazard-filled highway while blasting enemy vehicles, helicopters, and roadblocks. The true innovation lies in the transition mechanics: driving over specific platforms or taking a precise amount of damage ejects Cole from his car, forcing him to fight on foot as a commando. In this mode, Cole utilizes a specialized suit equipped with a jetpack to leap over bottomless chasms and a directional pulse rifle to eradicate infantry troops. Progression hinges on collecting specialized power-up chips scattered across both stages. These upgrades drastically alter your arsenal, granting three-way spread shots, heat-seeking missiles, or hyper-speed boosts. Managing your vehicle's health bar is critical, as sustaining too much damage destroys the car and strips away accumulated firepower before the foot-chase rescue sequence initiates.
