Doodle World

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Taiwan in 1992 by Sachen, Doodle World is a fascinating, unofficial NES platformer known for its distinct hand-drawn aesthetic and bizarre developmental origins. Trading traditional fantasy tropes for a living notebook page, the storyline centers on a heroic sketch who must traverse various ruled-paper landscapes—from crayon-colored forests to ink-stained dungeons—to rescue his creator's sketchbook from a malicious eraser monster named Erase-O. Though it never saw an official Western release during the 8-bit era, the game has since garnered a cult following among retro collectors and homebrew enthusiasts for its strikingly creative visual style, whimsical sound effects, and surprisingly challenging difficulty curve.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrollers, Doodle World integrates its notebook theme directly into the core mechanics. Players navigate five sprawling stages filled with stationery-based enemies, including bouncy thumbtacks, aggressive pencils, and flying paperclips. The protagonist's primary offensive move is tossing volatile ink blobs that stun or dissolve foes, though players can also acquire temporary pencil upgrades that extend their attack range. Special traversal items, like floating ruler platforms and eraser-block shields, add clever puzzle-platforming elements to the action. Health is tracked via a fading pencil sketch meter; taking too much damage causes the character to smudge and eventually fade away entirely, costing a life.
