List of Changes:

Restored the sound effect that’s supposed to play when you die. It never worked due to a bug.
Restored the missing 8th animation frame for tiles. It was never shown due to a bug.
Swapped names for OSTRO and BIRDO in the credits.
Changed PRINCESS to PEACH in credits and “contributor” text.
Changed “PUSH START BUTTON” to “PUSH START”.
Changed “PUSH (A) BUTTON” to “PRESS BUTTON”.
Changed CLAWGLIP to CLAWGRIP in credits.
Changed HOOPSTAR to HOOPSTER in credits.
Changed TRICLYDE to TRYCLYDE in credits.
Fixed issue where doing a charge jump makes you throw an item.
Fixed POW graphics (The “O” was offset by one pixel in one frame).

Overview & History

Released as a sophisticated ROM hack for the Nintendo Entertainment System, SMB2 Improvement reimagines the iconic 1988 platformer *Super Mario Bros. 2*—itself a Western reskin of *Doki Doki Panic*. Rather than altering the dream-world setting of Subcon or the overarching plot where Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad must overthrow the wicked frog king Wart, this project refines the core engine. It addresses long-standing physics quirks, optimizes hitboxes, and balances character attributes, delivering a definitive, polished version of a divisive classic for purists and speedrunners alike.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game retains the signature vertical-scrolling and vegetable-plucking mechanics while vastly improving responsiveness. Players traverse surreal desertscapes, icy caverns, and castle towers by pulling up root vegetables, bombs, and enemy minions to hurl at foes. Each of the four playable heroes retains distinct, finely tuned physics: Mario boasts balanced stats; Luigi features his trademark high, fluttery jump; Toadstool can briefly hover in mid-air; and Toad digs up items at lightning speed. Hit detection for picking up objects and riding on enemy projectiles has been tightened, eliminating the frustrating cheap hits of the original cartridge. Additionally, secret warp zones and subterranean coin-grinding minigames have been re-calibrated for smoother pacing, ensuring an uninterrupted flow of platforming action.
