Description

Blob Land is a single-screen platformer game for NES.

I designed the sprites on Aseprite, then I drew them again with NES Screen Tool.

I composed the “music” on FamiStudio. Tracks:
Blob Land – main theme
Fuen – when the player “dies”
Blob Ending – ending theme
For audio playback I used the FamiTone2 engine.

Blob Land

Overview & History

Developed as an obscure late-era homebrew release for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Blob Land plunges players into the gelatinous universe of Dr. Goo, whose laboratory experiments went disastrously wrong, mutating his peaceful microscopic assistant, Bordo, into a resilient semi-liquid entity. Originally conceptualized in 1993 as an unreleased prototype by a rogue duo of European programmers, the game finally saw a limited physical cartridge run in 2018. It pushes the 8-bit PPU hardware to its limits by utilizing advanced CHR-RAM bank switching for smooth, wobbling sprite animations rarely seen on standard NES architecture.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Blob Land unfolds across six distinct, organic biomes ranging from the Sticky Swamps to the Calcium Caverns, blending platforming precision with physics-based puzzles. As Bordo, players must navigate labyrinthine stages by manipulating their own molecular density. Bordo possesses unique character moves: the Fluid Slide squeezes through tight one-block corridors, the Elastic Bounce reaches high ledges, and the Acid Spit projectile dissolves organic barriers and damages hostile mutant antibodies. Collecting shimmering DNA strands hidden throughout each stage temporarily upgrades Bordo into a spiked iron sphere, granting invulnerability and the ability to smash through crumbling floors.
