DuckTales 2 (Two Players Hack)

Overview & History

Released originally by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, DuckTales 2 served as a beloved swan song for the 8-bit console, refining the platforming mechanics of its iconic predecessor. Decades later, the dedicated ROM hacking community breathed dynamic new life into this classic treasure-hunting adventure with the 'Two Players Hack'. Conceptualized by passionate retro modders, this cooperative modification rewrites the NES assembly code to allow simultaneous two-player action. Instead of taking turns exploring exotic locales like the Bermuda Triangle, the Muertos Islands, and the pyramids of Egypt, Scrooge McDuck can now be joined on-screen by a second player controlling Launchpad McQuack or Webby. This ingenious hack transforms a solitary treasure hunt into a chaotic, highly entertaining cooperative expedition, preserving the original's gorgeous sprite work, catchy chip-tune soundtrack by Kenji Yamazaki, and intricate level design while completely overhauling the social dynamic of the gameplay.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective remains gathering pieces of a torn treasure map belonging to Fergus McDuck, but the introduction of a second player fundamentally shifts how you navigate Capcom's deviously hidden platforming challenges. Both characters retain Scrooge's legendary cane-bounce mechanic—executed by holding down the attack button in mid-air—allowing players to pogo across enemies, smash open treasure chests, and reach vertiginous ledges. However, the hack introduces clever cooperative physics, enabling players to bounce off each other's heads to achieve unprecedented vertical heights. The screen dynamically tracks the lead player while keeping both adventurers within bounds, encouraging tight coordination during frantic boss fights against classic villains like Flintheart Glomgold and the Beagle Boys. Upgrades purchased from Gyro Gearloose—such as enhanced golf clubs and extended life bars—benefit both avatars, ensuring that teamwork is genuinely rewarded as you scour every stage for hidden diamonds, ice cream cones, and elusive secret passages.
