Description

Sonic the Hedgehog (better known as Sonic 3D Blast 5) was the first to be released, with the title screen graphics being replaced and the “Somari Team Presents” screen being removed. The first version known to be released is called Sonic 3D Blast 5, although it could have been released under a different name earlier. A couple of bugs in the game were fixed, like the inescapable pits in Green Hill Zone, as well as the addition of rings on the starting point of its first act, despite the game starting at the Spring Yard Zone with the earlier zones being available only through the level select cheat (although some variants of this version do start at Green Hill Zone). A hack of this exists which adds a 5 on the title screen. This incarnation of Somari is relatively common on multicarts, especially those made by J.Y. Company.

Released deep into the twilight era of the Nintendo Entertainment System by unlicensed developers capitalizing on the massive global frenzy of Sega's mascot, Sonic 3D Blast 5 is a fascinating piece of bootleg software history. Far from the isometric 3D realms of the official Sega Genesis and Saturn title it shamelessly mimics, this unauthorized NES port reimagines the adventure through a bizarre 2D top-down and pseudo-3D perspective. The storyline vaguely follows Sonic the Hedgehog on a rescue mission to save captive Flickies from Dr. Robotnik's newly minted metallic menagerie across bizarre, compressed landscapes that push the humble 8-bit hardware to its absolute structural limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling platformers, Sonic 3D Blast 5 tasks players with navigating maze-like, multi-directional stages to hunt down scattered Flickies and herd them into glowing rings. Sonic retains his signature rolling dash and jump attacks, though the 8-bit top-down physics engine makes precision momentum extremely tricky to master. Players must dodge hazard-laden floors, enemy patrol bots, and bottomless pits while managing a rapidly shifting perspective. Visually, the game utilizes clever tile manipulation to simulate depth, featuring surprisingly colorful sprite work, distorted loops, and heavily synthesized chiptune renditions of classic Sega melodies that give this underground NES curio an eerie, otherworldly charm.
