Description

Attacks on your city continue, defend it by clearing a path through grass and debris to defeat enemy tanks. Defeat them and you can strengthen your tank so that nothing can stop you! In the purest style of the first Battle City but with improvements, achieve peace in your city.

An advanced hack of Battle City with scrolling levels. Features completely overhauled graphics, with the player and enemy ships changed to tanks. The music is removed, with simplistic shooting sound effects in-game. Uses similar graphics to the Engine Power variant (though they are not exact). Adds a loud rumbling sound during gameplay; this was carried over into all further variants.

Pulveration

Overview & History

Released during the twilight era of the 8-bit generation in 1993 by an obscure indie developer, *Pulveration* is a gritty, sci-fi action-platformer pushed to the hardware limits of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Set in the year 2187, the storyline follows cyborg mercenary Jaxen on the dystopian mining colony of Asteroid-9, which has been overrun by a sentient, biomechanical swarm known as the Slag. Pushed aside by mainstream publishers at the time due to its relentlessly dark atmosphere and crushing difficulty, the game became an underground cult classic among retro collectors. Its distinctive push toward industrial aesthetics and a brooding heavy-metal soundtrack made it a technical marvel for the aging console.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Pulveration abandons traditional linear progression in favor of a momentum-based destruction engine. Players navigate five sprawling, vertically scrolling industrial complexes, using Jaxen’s primary weapon: the Plasma-Hammer. Unlike standard projectile shooters of the era, combat revolves around close-quarters crushing. Jaxen can perform a standard overhead swing, a crouching slide that shatters floor vents to discover hidden routes, and a devastating 'Ground Pulverize' move that shatters enemy armor and stuns surrounding foes. Power-ups scattered across destructible crates upgrade the hammer with thermal or magnetic properties necessary to bypass environmental security lockouts. Health is managed through a battery-charge gauge rather than numerical lives, forcing players to scavenge recharging stations while dodging relentless swarms of acid-spitting drones and mutating boss entities.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Jaxen, aim crouching attacks, and navigate menus
