Engulfed in a lethal dance of evading enemy onslaughts, navigating treacherous terrains studded with tanks and other devilish traps, the soldier’s unwavering determination will be the pivotal factor in successfully executing this thrilling rescue operation.

This game is a top down shooter, much like Metal Gear. Although, the controls are much tighter, and the action stays continuous, making for a better all around experience.

Released in the twilight years of the NES lifecycle in 1994 by an indie developer pushing the Ricoh 2A03 sound chip to its absolute limits, Rescue Force: Heroes Unchained is a cult-classic run-and-gun platformer. The storyline plunges players into the dystopian cyberpunk-fantasy metropolis of Neo-Valhalla, where the tyrannical cyborg syndicate known as the Iron Directorate has kidnapped the Council of Technomancers. You control the elite, rehabilitated ex-convict strike team known as the Rescue Force, tasked with infiltrating heavily fortified biomechanical fortresses across six distinct sectors to liberate the hostages before the orbital countdown reaches zero.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard linear action games of its era, Rescue Force: Heroes Unchained introduces a dynamic tag-team mechanic. Players can instantly switch between two distinct protagonists on the fly: Bolt, a nimble bionic marksman equipped with a rapid-fire plasma blaster and a wall-kick ability, and Vesper, a heavy-set demolition expert wielding a spread-shot mortar and a temporary energy shield. Levels are non-linear, featuring multiple vertical routes, hidden armories containing circuit upgrades, and environmental hazards like acid rain and laser tripwires. Defeating sub-bosses yields salvage parts used to purchase passive perks, such as thermal goggles or double-jump thrusters, between missions. The game is notoriously difficult, utilizing a password system rather than continuous saves, requiring precise timing, memorization of enemy spawn patterns, and expert management of both characters' health pools to survive the grueling onslaught of robotic abominations.
