With the exception of the MS-DOS version, the game is of the side-scrolling genre. In the game, Jonathan Harker fights Lucy Westenra as a vampiress, Count Dracula’s three brides, Dracula’s coach driver, Dracula’s fire-breathing dragon, Renfield and even Dracula himself and also in some different forms, such as him in his bat form, his young form and his evil wolf form. Levels in the game include the Romanian countryside, a rat-infested old village inn, Dracula’s castle, Dracula’s cavernous vaults, Dracula’s misty catacombs, various locations in London, Lucy’s crypt, a graveyard and Carfax Abbey.

Developed by Probe Software, this side-scrolling platformer serves as a tie-in to Francis Ford Coppola’s cinematic masterpiece. Despite hitting the market when the 16-bit Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis reigned supreme, the NES adaptation carved out a surprisingly atmospheric niche. It boldly distilled the sprawling, gothic narrative of Jonathan Harker's harrowing journey into Transylvania and the ensuing vampire hunts in Victorian London into five distinct stages. Rather than merely recycling the SNES build, Probe crafted an entirely bespoke 8-bit experience featuring moody color palettes, digitized-sounding gothic compositions by Jeroen Tel, and formidable platforming challenges that tested the patience of even seasoned retro gamers.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players step into the boots of Jonathan Harker across a linear progression of action-heavy stages, eventually transitioning into confrontations tied to Dracula's monstrous forms. Harker begins his quest equipped with a trusty melee weapon, but gameplay depth expands as players collect secondary items scattered throughout crumbling castles and fog-choked streets. The movement engine prioritizes deliberate, weighted jumps and precise positioning, as mistiming an attack leaves Harker vulnerable to swarming rats, phantom brides, and grotesque ghouls. Health management is critical due to the lack of frequent checkpoints, forcing players to thoroughly explore shadowy alcoves for hidden life-restoring rations and weapon upgrades. Boss encounters demand pattern recognition and precise timing, culminating in intense duels against the centuries-old vampire lord himself.
