Re-experience the mystery of CV1 through the eyes of our favorite plumber, now with updated graphics and more.

Not too many people know it…

But when Simon made his mythic quest to defeat the count, none other than Mario himself had set out to do just the same (he was just a little late). So it was, that Mario tasked himself with cleaning up Simon’s leftovers. No glory necessary; he does it because he likes to!

SMB-CV

Overview & History

Released as an ambitious, unauthorized bootleg cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System during the late 1980s, *SMB-CV* (Super Mario Bros. - Castlevania) is a fascinating historical curio. Crafted by unlicensed Asian developers who hacked the code of *Super Mario Bros.*, this bizarre crossover reimagines the Mushroom Kingdom as the grim, candle-lit halls of Dracula’s estate. Rather than leaping gracefully over Goombas to rescue Princess Toadstool, Mario finds himself thrust into a gothic nightmare where he must traverse crumbling platforms, whip malevolent spirits, and conquer Transylvanian horrors. While it never saw an official retail release by Nintendo or Konami, it remains a legendary artifact of the 8-bit underground hacking scene, celebrated by retro enthusiasts for its sheer absurdity and surprisingly competent asset fusion.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game brilliantly merges the engine and physics of *Super Mario Bros.* with the gothic aesthetic and weapon mechanics of *Castlevania*. Players control Mario as he navigates side-scrolling platforming stages infested with classic Universal monsters and Konami-style ghouls. Instead of hurling fireballs or stomping enemies, Mario wields Simon Belmont’s iconic leather whip, letting him lash out at approaching bats, skeletons, and floating medusa heads. Scattered throughout the masonry are traditional *Castlevania* sub-weapons—such as the dagger and holy water—which replace Mario's typical power-ups. The score counter is traded for a heart currency system used to power these special attacks. Despite the eerie atmosphere, Mario retains his momentum-based inertia, running and jumping with familiar NES physics, though colliding with certain gothic hazards instantly drains his health, evoking the unforgiving difficulty of early vampire-hunting adventures.
