Donkey Kong

Overview & History

Released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, this iconic platformer was ported by Shigeru Miyamoto from the original 1981 arcade megahit. The storyline introduces Mario (originally known as Jumpman), a humble carpenter who must rescue his beloved Pauline from a mischievous, giant ape named Donkey Kong, who has climbed to the top of a dangerous construction site. While the original arcade version featured four distinct stages, the NES port famously omitted the cement factory stage due to cartridge memory limitations, leaving players to conquer the thrilling girder stage, the high-altitude pie factory, and the structural rivet stage where Mario wrenches out supports to send the ape tumbling down.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Donkey Kong pioneered the platform genre by introducing vertical traversal and dynamic obstacle avoidance. Controlling Mario, players must master his signature single-button jump to clear rolling blue barrels, leaping fireballs (known as Spring or Fire), and bouncing cement pans. Unlike later iterations, Mario cannot survive falls from high ledges, adding intense tension to every descent and climb. Mechanics heavily rely on timing and precision: players can utilize scattered hammers for temporary invincibility to smash obstacles, and collect Pauline's dropped parasols, hats, and purses for bonus points. Each completed four-stage loop increases the speed and hostility of the hazards, culminating in a relentless test of arcade endurance as Mario races against an unforgiving timer.
