Description

At some point during the 1980’s the world has become a stage of battle between the Federation and the Empire. The latter sees itself as the successor state to the malevolent Badds, also known as the Nazz. One day, the Federation discovers that the Imperial leader Generalissimo Killt decides to complete an unfinished project codenamed “Albatros” and started by the Badds. The Federation sends their hero Super Joe to stop the Empire’s plans, but he is captured. Ladd Spencer, a member of the special FF Battalion, is dispatched to rescue Super Joe and uncover the enemy’s secrets.

This version of Bionic Commando is loosely based on the original arcade game and its computer ports, having different levels and plot. The protagonist is a soldier with a bionic arm that extends and contracts. His arm allows him to grab on to fixed objects to swing around and climb up platforms, which is the only way to do so due to the lack of a jumping ability. The arm also grabs opponents and pulls them towards the player character.

After most levels the Bionic Commando will receive items. Often these items are required to successfully complete other levels. Additionally, each level will require a different colored communicator in order to make sense of message traffic.

Bionic Commando

Overview & History

Released by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, *Bionic Commando* is a legendary platformer that subverted genre conventions by completely omitting the ability to jump. Instead, players control Captain Rad Spencer, who must infiltrate the Albatross fortress to stop the revival of Master-D by the imperial forces. Originally adapted from an arcade title, the NES iteration heavily expanded the lore, infamously altering its grim historical parallels for Western audiences while retaining its tense, espionage-infused atmosphere. The game stands out for its sprawling, non-linear world map, communication tapping mechanics, and a hauntingly atmospheric soundtrack composed by Harumi Fujita.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional 8-bit contemporaries, navigation revolves entirely around Spencer’s signature bionic arm, replacing the standard jump button with a versatile grappling hook. Players must master the physics of swinging, retracting, and launching over bottomless pits, enemy patrols, and spiked hazards. The game demands spatial puzzle-solving; players must carefully angle shots to grapple ceilings, pull themselves upward, or swing across perilous chasms. Scattered throughout enemy territories are communication rooms where players must wire-tap enemy transmissions to receive vital intel or request tactical reinforcements. Furthermore, the adventure features top-down shooting sequences in neutral zones, weapon upgrades acquired by conquering enemy red areas, and a notorious final boss encounter that demands precise grappling reflexes to destroy the escaping helicopter before time runs out.
