Description

Battle City is a refined and updated version of Namco’s arcade game Tank Battalion. Destroy different enemy tanks, while trying to keep them away from your base. When you have destroyed 20 enemy tanks you advance to the next level with different layout. In each level there’s some obstacles which you can use to your advantage. Obstacles include red bricks which you can shoot out of your way, silver bricks which are highly armored, water and ice. You start the game with a basic tank, which you can power up to better one little by little.

The game includes a construction mode, so you can make your own levels when you have played through all the 35 original levels.

Battle City

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1985 for the Famicom before making its legendary leap to the NES, Battle City is the spiritual successor to Namco’s own 1980 arcade classic, Tank Battalion. While its predecessor was a relatively obscure quarter-eater, this 8-bit evolution perfected single-screen tactical combat. Tasked with defending a glowing eagle headquarters—represented as base command—from relentless waves of oncoming enemy armor, players experienced one of cooperative gaming's earliest triumphs. The game features 35 distinct stages of grid-based warfare, which, upon completion, mercifully loop back to stage one with increased difficulty, making it an endless test of survival for retro enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Battle City pits your yellow tank against 20 aggressive enemy vehicles per round, ranging from nimble fast-tanks to heavily armored red tanks that require multiple hits to destroy. The core tactical depth stems from destructible environments made of brick and steel. Players can carve out strategic tunnels or completely expose their base, turning every bullet into a high-stakes decision. Destroying flashing bonus tanks spawns power-ups on the battlefield: the Star upgrades your firepower, the Grenade obliterates all active enemies on screen, the Shrapnel turns your base walls into impenetrable steel temporarily, and the Clock freezes all foes in place. Cooperative two-player mode introduces a chaotic dynamic, where friendly fire stuns your partner, transforming teamwork into a hilarious test of spatial awareness.
