Darkman

Overview & History

Released by Ocean Software in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Darkman is a cinematic tie-in based on Sam Raimi’s cult-classic superhero film. The game follows Dr. Peyton Westlake, a brilliant scientist whose laboratory is firebombed by the ruthless gangster Robert G. Durant. Left horribly disfigured and driven by vengeance, Westlake utilizes his unstable synthetic skin technology to infiltrate the mobsters' operations. Unlike typical side-scrollers of its era, the NES adaptation attempts to capture the film's gritty atmosphere by dividing its progression into distinct thematic stages, capturing Westlake's desperate race against his 99-minute skin degradation timer.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players navigate a punishing mix of platforming and action across five diverse stages inspired by the movie. The core gimmick revolves around the iconic disguise mechanic: in the first half of certain stages, players must snap secret photographs of mob targets using a crosshair camera interface. Armed with these photos, Peyton must carefully craft synthetic rubber face masks in his makeshift laboratory. Wearing these disguises allows him to bypass heavily armed guards undetected, provided he doesn't draw suspicion. Action sequences shift into gritty brawls where Peyton can throw punches, leap across hazardous steel girders, and hurl explosive pipes. Between stages, unique bonus rounds require players to piece together shredded documents to reveal Durant's hideouts, perfectly mirroring the film's detective elements.
