Description

From Shigesato Itoi comes an authentic RPG with a modern-style stage!

Mother’s Day, the rural American town this boy lives in. It was peaceful here – until yesterday. Zombies back from the grave and crazed animals have been attacking the town residents – almost as though being controlled by someone… or something. At this rate, the town is doomed! What will happen to the Earth? And what about those dear to you…?

The boy makes a resolution and leaves his home. And his adventure continues as he finds friends who will fight alongside him. The keyword is courage and friendship, not to mention love…

Mother

Overview & History

Released by Nintendo in 1989 for the Famicom, Mother (later localized as EarthBeginnings) was visionary director Shigesato Itoi's subversive answer to traditional medieval fantasy RPGs. Instead of swords and dragons, this cult classic drops players into a quirky, alternate-reality 1980s America plagued by hostile household appliances, rebellious youths, and eerie extraterrestrial forces. The narrative follows Ninten, a young boy endowed with latent psychic abilities, who leaves his suburban home after his house is haunted by a malevolent poltergeist. Teaming up with the book-smart Lloyd, the psychic Ana, and the martial artist/rocker Teddy, Ninten embarks on a cross-country odyssey to collect eight haunting melodies, solve the mystery behind the alien invasion known as Giegue, and heal a fractured cosmic history.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike contemporary Dragon Quest clones, Mother utilizes a top-down perspective blending standard grid-based exploration with an intense, first-person turn-based combat system. Players navigate towns, hospitals, and treacherous wildernesses while managing harsh encounter rates. Combat revolves around classic commands (Fight, Bash, PSI, Goods, Run), but the mechanics lean heavily into non-violent resolutions; Ninten can often "Talk" to pacify distressed enemies, while his PSI arsenal focuses heavily on status manipulation, healing, and reality-warping offense. Exploration requires careful resource management, as ATMs serve as banks and cash points rather than traditional inns, and phone calls to Ninten's mother are vital for healing and curing homesickness. The game is notoriously punishing, demanding grinding and strategic equipment purchasing to survive late-game dungeons.
