Description

A fantasy-themed strategy. It plays something like Famicom/Advance Wars or Daisenryaku, where the goal is to quickly conquer locations by producing a lot of units each turn and sending them against enemy forces. As with those games, there is also a little close-up graphic of the two units whenever they meet for battle, which shows how the two sides are faring in the conflict.

King of Kings

Overview & History

Released in 1989 by Wisdom Tree, King of Kings is a unique unlicensed NES multi-cartridge compilation containing three distinct biblical platformers: *Book of Genesis*, *Exodus*, and *Wisdom Tree's Daniel*. Developed during an era when Wisdom Tree bypassed Nintendo's official lockout chips to produce explicitly Christian video games, this compilation stands out for its educational yet thoroughly retro gaming ambition. Each sub-game takes players through iconic Old Testament historical narratives, rendered in colorful, 8-bit pixel art.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard action-platformers of the late '80s, *King of Kings* shifts the primary gameplay loop away from combat toward exploration, puzzle-solving, and item collection. In *Book of Genesis*, players guide Noah as he navigates vibrant jungle and cave environments to herd pairs of animals onto the ark before the rising floodwaters consume the screen. *Exodus* casts you as Moses, traversing the desolate wilderness while managing stamina and collecting mana or scrolls. *Daniel* plays out in the lion's den and Babylonian courts, requiring players to avoid guards and royal hazards using stealth rather than offensive attacks. Character moves are deliberately paced: Moses and Noah utilize standard platforming jumps paired with projectile-free defensive maneuvering, forcing players to time their movements carefully past hostile fauna and environmental traps rather than slashing or shooting enemies.
