The Great Wall

Overview & History

Released exclusively for the Famicom/NES era in Asia by Sachen, The Great Wall (known in Chinese as 長城) is an obscure, culturally rich action-platformer steeped in ancient Chinese history and folklore. Tasked with defending the legendary architectural marvel from relentless waves of nomadic invaders, mythological beasts, and rival warlords, players step into the armored boots of a valiant imperial general. Despite limited Western distribution and its unauthorized development status, the title stands out for its ambitious historical framing, atmospheric chiptune soundtracks that blend traditional pentatonic scales with 8-bit urgency, and surprisingly dense level design that captures the perils of China's northern frontier.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players navigate five sprawling, vertically and horizontally scrolling stages that transition from desolate border badlands and dense mountain passes to the ramparts of the stone fortification itself. The protagonist wields a versatile traditional broadsword capable of executing sweeping horizontal strikes and a powerful overhead downward slash. Defeated enemies occasionally drop jade artifacts and herbal teas that restore dwindling health. Movement requires precise platforming discipline, as missing a ledge on the shifting scaffold stages results in instant death. Boss encounters demand pattern recognition, pitting the general against colossal barbarian chieftains and sorcerers who summon phantom hordes.
