Description

Pyramid II is a real-time puzzle game similar to Tetris. Stones of various shapes and sizes fall from the top of the screen, and you need to move and rotate the stones so they fill complete lines at the bottom of the screen. Should the stones reach the top of the screen the game is over. Unlike the square and rectangular shaped pieces found in Tetris, each of the shapes in Pyramid have one or more angles to them making complete lines more difficult to form.

Released exclusively in Taiwan during the late 1980s by bootleg developer Hummer Team (often distributed under various obscure alternate titles), Pyramid II for the Famicom/NES is an unofficial, highly ambitious sequel to Jaleco's Puzznic meets platforming tropes. Operating in the wild west of unlicensed Asian cartridge manufacturing, this rare gem was never officially localized for Western markets, making it a coveted Holy Grail for retro collectors. The storyline thrusts an intrepid, Indiana Jones-esque explorer deep into the cursed catacombs of the Pharaohs. Your mission is to navigate claustrophobic, trap-laden chambers, dodge mummified sentinels, and escape before the ancient masonry completely collapses around you.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard puzzle games, Pyramid II blends logic-block manipulation with side-scrolling action. Players must push, pull, and stack heavy stone monoliths to bridge lethal chasms, crush crawling scarabs, and reach elusive ankh keys. The game features grid-based physics where misjudging a single push traps your character permanently, forcing a restart. Character moves are deliberate and rigid, emphasizing careful spatial planning over frantic button-mashing. You can jump short distances, pick up specific artifacts, and trigger floor switches to open barred tomb doors. As you progress through the multi-tiered pyramid, the ambient chiptune soundtrack grows increasingly tense, complemented by surprisingly detailed sprite work and eerie, ancient-themed background tiles that push the NES hardware's color palette to its limits.
