Description

When the world was in Chaos, there was a big fight between the God of Heaven and Evils of Hell. The Evils were captured by the God of Heaven and restrained in four towers with four magic Balls. People have now lived peacefully for thousands of years. As time passed, the magic Balls were affected by the magnetic field and have become loose. At this moment, the Abbot of Sou-Lin Temple senses the crisis, then orders Pan-zo and Pan-lo to recapture the Evils with the four magic Balls.

Rockball

Overview & History

Released exclusively in Japan in 1992 by Panther Software, Rockball is a bizarre and largely forgotten hybrid of sports and action for the Family Computer (Famicom). The storyline casts players into a dystopian, futuristic arena where gladiatorial combat meets team sports. Rather than playing traditional football or soccer, combatants must maneuver heavy, explosive boulders across treacherous terrain while fending off aggressive mutant opponents. Due to its late-era Famicom release and niche genre mashup, the title never saw a Western localization, making it a highly sought-after curiosity among retro cartridge collectors today.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Rockball operates from a top-down perspective, blending the twitch reflexes of an arcade brawler with the spatial strategy of hockey. Players control a distinct gladiator whose primary objective is to seize the glowing central rock and hurl it into the opponent’s glowing terminal to score points. Matches take place across hazardous stages featuring moving platforms, electrified floors, and crumbling bridges that add environmental danger to the fast-paced scoring system. Characters possess unique attributes: some excel in speed, while others boast heavy-hitting melee attacks capable of knocking opponents out of bounds to steal the ball. Power-ups scattered across the arena grant temporary speed boosts, shield barriers, or explosive shockwaves, turning every match into chaotic, unpredictable warfare.
