Tasac

Overview & History

Released during the twilight years of the Famicom/NES era in 1993 by an obscure developer, Tasac is a hidden gem of side-scrolling action-platformers. The storyline plunges players into the ruined obsidian citadel of the Void Emperor, who has fractured the mystical Chrono-Crystal across five floating dimensional realms. You control Tasac, a disgraced nomad-knight seeking redemption by reclaiming the crystal shards before reality collapses. While it never received an official North American localization during its original run, the game gained a cult following among retro importers for its moody atmosphere, striking monochrome-heavy sprite art, and hauntingly melancholic chiptune soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Tasac challenges players with demanding, precision-based platforming across five non-linear stages filled with environmental hazards and unforgiving enemy placement. Unlike typical NES heroes, Tasac utilizes a dual-stance mechanic: the agile 'Nomad' stance for high-speed momentum and long jumps, and the heavy 'Vanguard' stance, which roots the character in place for devastating melee strikes. Character moves include the standard sword slash, a vertical upward-thrust used to reach high ledges, and a risk-reward 'Soul Dash' that lets Tasac phase through enemy projectiles at the cost of a sliver of health. Resource management is vital, as defeating foes yields amber essence required to unleash screen-clearing temporal shockwaves against relentless boss encounters.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Tasac, duck, and aim vertical strikes
  • Action Keys: Z for Sword Attack, X for Jump, C for Soul Dash
