Description

The entire solar system is being attacked by the vicious Gyrusians, and it’s up to you to save the day! You will need to fly your spaceship to each of the nine planets and then clear three stages of enemies to rid that planet of the Gyrusians. You start the game with a single cannon, but can gain a double cannon after shooting a power up satellite. After clearing each planet, there is another bonus stage where additional weapons and bonus points can be collected. Gyruss is an arcade action shooter, however instead of piloting your spaceship horizontally or vertically, you move in a circle around the perimeter of the screen.

Gyruss

Overview & History

Originally a masterstroke in arcade design by Konami, Gyruss made its way to the Famicom Disk System (FDS) in 1988, courtesy of Ultra Games/Konami. Diverging from traditional vertical or horizontal shooters, this cult classic transports players into a hypnotic, tubular space-age odyssey. The FDS version capitalizes on the hardware's RP2G sound chip, delivering a breathtaking 8-bit rendition of Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor alongside high-tempo synthesized space-rock anthems as you warp from Earth out to the edge of the solar system, conquering Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and beyond.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard fixed shooters, *Gyruss* features a unique pseudo-3D circular perspective. Your fighter is locked to a circular track lining the perimeter of the screen, moving endlessly in a 360-degree orbit to intercept waves of alien armadas, asteroids, and enemy formations converging from the vanishing-point center. As you destroy red enemy commanders, you upgrade your single-shot laser into a devastating twin-shot cannon. The game is structured across distinct planetary stages interspersed with challenging "Challenge Stages" where players rack up bonus points by annihilating intricate, swooping enemy formations without missing a shot.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Rotate ship clockwise and counter-clockwise along the circular perimeter
  • Action Keys: Fire lasers (Hold for continuous rapid-fire)
  • Enter: Start / Pause the game and select options
