Description

NBA Jam, which featured 2-on-2 basketball, was one of the first real playable basketball arcade games, and was also one of the first sports games to feature NBA-licensed teams and players, and their real digitized likenesses. A key feature of NBA Jam was the exaggerated nature of the play – players jumped many times above their own height, making slam dunks that defied both human capabilities and the laws of physics. There were no fouls, free throws, or violations except goaltending and 24 second violations. This meant the player was able to freely shove or elbow his opponent out of the way. Additionally, the game had an “on fire” feature, where if one player made three baskets in a row, he would become “on fire” and have unlimited turbo, no goaltending, and increased shooting ability, until the other team scored (or the player had scored four consecutive baskets while “on fire”).

Overview & History

Released by Acclaim Entertainment in 1994, the Sega Game Gear port of Midway’s coin-op phenomenon brought hyper-kinetic 2-on-2 basketball to the palm of your hand. While it lacked the arcade cabinet's distinct digitized voice samples and crisp graphical fidelity due to the handheld's hardware limitations, this adaptation ingeniously compressed the frantic, gravity-defying action into a portable cartridge. Developer Iguana Entertainment managed to retain the core roster, arcade physics, and signature court rivalries, making it a technical marvel for Sega's 8-bit color system, despite a constrained screen resolution and occasional sprite flicker during fast-paced fast breaks.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard basketball simulations, NBA Jam throws out traditional foul rules, granting players free reign to shove, elbow, and body-check opponents to steal the ball. The defining gameplay mechanic centers on the "On Fire" status: sink three consecutive baskets with the same player, and you become virtually unstoppable with infinite turbo, blazing speed, and flaming hoops that scorch the net from anywhere past the half-court line. Roster lineups feature two-player duos from legendary 90s franchises—such as Pippen and Grant for the Chicago Bulls—each rated for speed, power, three-pointers, and dunking ability. Executing high-flying slam dunks involves building up your limited turbo meter and soaring ten feet into the air to perform gravity-defying, backflipping slams that shatter the backboard if triggered at just the right moment.
