Description

Fray: Shugyouhen is a midquel to Xak. The demons of Zekisis have managed to invade the world of Xak. Fray goes on a quest to slay the demons and save the villages on the way. The player’s default attack consists of single projectiles, but the player can collect power-ups for more widespread shots as well as different special elemental attacks (with mana pickups to power them). At the end of each stage, the player will have to defeat a boss, before stopping at a village, getting information and upgrades and then proceeding to the next stage.

Fray: Shugyouhen

Overview & History

Developed by MicroCabin and released for the Sega Game Gear in 1991, *Fray: Shugyouhen* (Fray's Training Chapter) serves as a charming spin-off to the cult-classic *Xak* RPG series. Rather than following the grand top-down epic formula of the main franchise, this portable title reimagines the titular heroine, Fray Bowmal—a brilliant yet rebellious magic academy student—as the star of a fast-paced, vertically scrolling action platformer. Sent away by her master to undergo rigorous training in dangerous mystical ruins, Fray must leap, cast spells, and dodge waves of whimsical monsters. While it originally required a Japanese Game Gear cartridge, the title remains a fascinating hidden gem of the 8-bit era, blending cute aesthetics with surprisingly punishing difficulty and a catchy chiptune soundtrack.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional dungeon-crawling RPGs, *Fray: Shugyouhen* focuses purely on platforming agility and magical combat. Players navigate Fray through vertically ascending stages, dodging flying creatures, jumping across precarious floating platforms, and collecting power-ups that enhance her offensive capabilities. Fray relies primarily on projectile-based magic attacks, which can be upgraded to cover wider areas or deal heavier damage to tougher enemies. Each stage culminates in a frantic boss encounter requiring precise positioning and pattern recognition. The game's unique identity is further cemented by its distinct visual style, featuring colorful anime-inspired character portraits, vibrant enemy sprites, and expressive animations that push the Sega Game Gear's hardware limits to deliver a distinctly arcade-like experience in the palm of your hand.
